Is art school really worth it?

Neko asked:

I go to a magnet high school for visual arts.
I’ve been debating weather I should continue art in college.
And if not…why am I here in the first place?!
Is all this work really worth it and why be an artist? It doesn’t pay.
What are the jobs you can get for drawing an apple?

You may not be able to make a career out of selling your paintings, but graphic design is certainly in high demand. Or, here’s an oddball, you could be a children’s book illustrator.

Being a straight Illustrator is hard… but applying your talents to things like cg graphics and 3d modeling is a legitimate job. It’s where a lot of animators and digital artists end up.

You can also check things out in the movie industry, they use quite a few artists. A lot of 2d artists head to graphic design and comic book work too.

My sister in law is in the same position. What she did is she went to one of the top art schools and picked fine art as a minor and graphic design as a major since it’s a lot more marketable.

Many years ago I started school to be an engineer, I ended up with a BS degree in Industrial design. That was good because I could always get a job as a draftsman/designer in machinery design. I made money that way. I still make money that way.
My last year of ID study I realized that I was an artist. So I then went for a Master of Fine Arts degree so I could teach in a university and make a living that way. I spent about 40 years teaching.
I never expected to make any money as an artist. Artists get their degrees in the USA so they can teach. Or give up on fine art and go into commercial art.
Art very seldom pays anybody anything. Some artists marry for money, or marry a hard working spouse who will provide for them so they can make art.
I developed as an artist in art school. It was the best thing for me. I even went onto get a Ph.D in Creative Arts at New York University which would make me more valuable as a professor. This Doctorate degree is no longer offered at NYU, or anywhere else as far as I know.
The arts are always a risky field to get a degree in. Too many artists with M.F.A. degrees and very few teaching jobs available.
Being an artist is a hard life, it is not at all romantic. Good luck whatever you do.
