Do you think more public schools should have magnet arts programs?

Eric S asked:

Like my school which you auditioned to get in and had music, dance, theatre, communications, visual art. And the concept was to fuse this in with academics.

You had all races and ethnicities and everybody was accepted as they were. But after coming out of a high school like that, you have idealistic expectations of the rest of the world.

Do you think the benefits of an art school program make them worthwhile?

Why does visual art stress the importance of training so much?

kdfjj K asked:

I mean in terms of professional artists. Nearly every one of the well-known artists have been formally educated in art, and self-taught artists even today appear to be almost shunned.

The only reason this sticks out is because it’s nothing like that in similar fields…? I mean, people are acclaimed as musical geniuses without having ever stepped foot in a conservatory. People like Tolstoy and Dickens aren’t naturally expected to have studied Literature at an education institute. So why does art school almost seem like an indisputable requirement for visual artists?

What’s the best school for illustration/visual art?

somegirl asked:

I’m an art student and I want to transfer to an illustration program or major in visual arts. Anyone know of any really good schools? Is OCAD in Toronto any good? That seems to be the school that I’ll most likely be going to since I’m Canadian and studying abroad just seems to be too complicated. Studying abroad isn’t out of the question though, since I would really like to study in another country. Thanks for any help.
The reason why I’m asking if OCAD is any good is because where I live (Greater Vancouver Area), There’s Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design, and that school sucks major balls.

Program for the Gifted in Visual Arts?

anicoleslaw asked:

I need some help. My daughter has been advised to apply for admission to a program for the gifted in visual arts (elementary school).

I would LOVE to see her in this program. It doesn’t cost anything and is sponsored by the regular school system.

What are they looking for when they make their placement decisions? They have asked me to fill out a questionnaire (which I have done) about my daughter and her talents and abilities.

Does anyone know their criteria for selecting which students are admitted into a program such as this?

Thanks!!

College that has a wide range of academics INCLUDING a great design/vis arts program?

fagetoshima asked:

Having trouble finding reputable universities/colleges that have a great design/visual arts program that aren’t strictly art schools.

My high school profile is good but not Ivy League status.

I don’t want to go to an art school that’s strictly art and design because I wouldn’t get as much opportunity (if any) to explore and see if there’s something I really like that I don’t know I like at this time.

The link between ACTING and VISUAL ARTS?

Normandie asked:

Ever realised how these two complement each other and involve much the same talents?

Portraying something by physically performing it and drawing or painting it is much the same skill.

Think about it, why are some of the greatest actors skilled in visual arts? A few examples:

Robert de niro’s father was an abstract expressionist
Jack nicholson offered a job as an animator due to his comic drawing skills
Orlando bloom excelled in visual arts at school

the list goes on and on.

Thoughts?
